What Would You Do Without Your Hands? (Dee) | This Is A Woman

The next body part I am choosing to share with you are my hands.

My hands do so much. I couldn’t begin to imagine what it would be like if I couldn’t use them properly; even an impaired finger would be terrible. They rub my man after a long day at work. They change and feed my daughter every single day. They help me prepare dinner, drive, and get ready in the morning. Just think about what it would be like if we couldn’t use one of our hands. My heart honestly goes out to those who have impaired fine motor skills like rheumatoid arthritis or those that have had fingers/hands amputated. I know there’s so many different ways we can pick apart our bodies from head to toe, but we are blessed that our bodies function the way they are supposed to. Vanity really isn’t as important as we all think it is.

Even though I try not to be, I am still a little vain myself. For as long as I can remember I bit my nails. I’d tear up my cuticles and bite my nails until they bled. I feel like it was because of my unmanaged anxiety; nail biting is a nervous habit after all. My parents would constantly try to get me to stop. They bought me all sorts of products that were supposed to help- bitter nail polish, nail covers, nail hardeners, gloves, etc. but I just couldn’t control it. I remember one year when I was 8-ish years old I tried to give up nail biting for Lent and couldn’t even do it then. After I got my anxiety under control I was able to stop. I still have a hard time not picking at my nails and cuticles, but I’m working on it. “No man will ever put a ring on your finger if your nails are always all chewed up,” my mother always told me. Maybe it’s a coincidence, but I stopped shortly after I met my man, before we even started dating.

The size of my hands has always bothered me, too. When I thought I was a lesbian it was fine because I was butch and the fact that my hands were large made me seem manlier. My girlfriend at the time told me I had “man hands” compared to hers, which was a compliment then, but now sometimes gets to me.
