Decker's long life recognized as 'most admirable'
Ninety-one-year-old Wilson Decker grows impatient with too many questions. That makes writing a story about him challenging.
Decker would rather allow his life do the talking.
Ask him about being retired as district sales manager at Minnesota Rubber Co. since 1986 and he retorts, “Retired. Yeah, right.”
Retirement is a relative term. Decker is a doer. Already in the 10 th decade of life, he has lots of memories but prefers living in the now.
“I don’t spend a lot time reflecting on the past,” says Decker, a New Jersey native and River Falls resident since 1996. “I can’t die yet. I have too many things to do.”
After several enthusiastic nominations, Decker was named Pierce County Most Admired Senior Citizen on Aug. 12 during the 2011 Pierce County Fair.
The award praises Decker’s “dedication and service to the community.”
“It’s humbling and makes me feel very proud to be recognized like that,” Decker says. “It probably means I’m meeting my long-range goals.”

Decker was nominated for Most Admired Senior Citizen by several of his watercolor painting students at the River Falls Public Library.
Wrote Suzanne Stout: “…I was immediately welcomed into his adult watercolor class with a friendly smile and greeting that made me feel that I truly belonged…Wilson is faithfully at the library every Monday morning, ready to teach our class new techniques and instill confidence in us to explore new ideas and challenge us with difficult subject matter.
“I admire Wilson’s energy and zest for life. At the age of 91, I hope that I can be as active as Wilson is…he belongs to a pool league at the River Falls Senior Center…He is an avid golfer and spends several days out on the River Falls Golf Club course.
“Even though Wilson has had several hip replacements, this does not seem to slow him down.

1. Patriot’s Day Ceremony (9/11 Remembrance)
This Sunday will mark the passing of ten years since the terrorist attacks on American soil occurred the morning of September 11, 2001. In recognition of those who lost their lives during these attacks and the events following, DuPont citizens will be joining others around the country to recognize what has been declared as “Patriot’s Day”. A Patriot’s Day memorial and commemorative program will be held this Sunday, September 11 beginning at 11:00 AM in the Pioneer Middle School gymnasium located at 1750 Bob’s Hollow Lane in DuPont. DuPont Mayor Tamara Jenkins and Pioneer Principal Andre Stout will be the speakers for this event.
Communities and places of worship around the country, including the City of DuPont, will participate in a commemorative ringing of bells and chimes on Sunday in observation of Patriot’s Day. As part of this act of national recognition our DuPont Clock Tower will ring out a series of five chimes at each of the following local times which are the exact Eastern Standard times each event occurred:
