HP: Gen8 servers could cut d. centre costs

NEW YORK - Hewlett-Packard this week introduced Gen8 , its next generation of servers, which integrate new technologies designed to cut -overall maintenance and power costs in data centers while maintaining high server uptimes.

Gen8 servers have new hardware and software technology for better performance-per-watt and a reduction in the manual labor involved in updating servers, HP said. The automatic updating and server load-balancing features will help save millions of dollars over a three-year span, HP said.

The new servers address the need to balance limited space and provide more processing power in data centers, while curbing power costs. The servers include technologies resulting from a two-year, US$300 million research program code-named Project Voyager, in which the company tried to find ways to automate data-center tasks and reduce costs. The project resulted in more than 900 patents and a new systems architecture called HP ProActive Insight architecture, the company said.

HP also has a separate project under way to reshape the server architecture called Project Moonshot, in which the company is tying its servers with Calxeda chips based on ARM processors to bring power and performance to cloud-related workloads.

The Gen8 servers will become generally available in March. HP did not provide full specifications of the servers, but earlier this month the company published initial details that they are multi-socket and based on Intel's upcoming E5 processors, whose announcement is expected soon. Gen8 servers will eventually replace the Proliant G7 family, which was introduced in 2010 and based on x86 processors from Intel and Advanced Micro Devices.

One of the new power-saving technologies is HP's 3-D Sea of Sensors, where overutilized servers are identified based on real-time location, power, workload and temperature data. Based on the data, system administrators can redirect workloads to ensure that servers are operating at the most peak efficiency. The new technology reduces the manual labor involved in monitoring power and cooling, according to HP.

How to enable network discovery and file sharing | Windows 7 ...

Some of our readers reported having problems sharing files with other computers from their network. To help them, we decided to create this tutorial. We will show you how to make your Windows Vista computer visible in your network and how to enable file sharing. All you have to do is to read carefully and follow these instructions.

All the required configuration is done using the Network and Sharing Center .

The third configuration item allows you to turn on the so called 'Public' folder sharing. If you turn it on, Windows Vista will create a folder called 'Public' which will be shared with other people using the same computer or other computers from your network. Any file or folder that you will copy into the 'Public' folder will be automatically shared with everyone that has access to it.

The next configuration option allows you to share your printer. Select Turn on printer sharing

I can't turn the network discovery and file sharing options on or off. Those 2 options are greyed out. Other than them, the rest i can change. It says i can use my firewall settings to change this setting.

Can anyone tell me how do i configure firewall or any other programs so i can change the network discovery and file sharing options? Thanks alot.

we are sharing between 3 computers in a peer-to-peer network between 3 Vista computers. We can get them to share between the "Public" folders, but when we try and set the sharing up on any of the other folders (we want to set up the "my documents" folder on the boss's computer as shared access for the office manager and myself ~ he doesn't have to have access to our computers...but we need acccess to his...so we won't have to be running in his office every little bit to access the files we need!) It keeps asking for user name and password, but none of the blasted things have user names and passwords set up! It's also a private workgroup, not a public. We even had an outside tech guy come in..he said all of our configurations are set up correctly and he couldn't figure out why it was doing it either! We are at the point where we are saying "to heck with it" and are going to put all the important stuff in the public folders unless someone can make a suggestion as to something else for us to try. Firewall has been turned off on individual computers, the firewall is on the T1 line, external to the inner workgroup, so I know it's not a firewall problem. Matching user accounts have been set up on all three computers, with same names, no passwords, all with administrator privledges, so I know it is not that. Can actually see the hard drives, see the folders, but when try to access them, cannot access them.
