Clan of humans struggle to survive in new sci-fi novel set 4000 years in future

With “6001 The Sleepers” (ISBN 0980809614), W. R. Widerberg rolls out the second novel in his acclaimed sci-fi trilogy that takes place 4,000 years in the future. The homeland of the main characters has been frozen over by radical climate change. Few humans remain, and those who do live an essentially prehistoric life. Their arms to hunt and defend themselves are nothing more than bows, arrows and flint knives. In this installment, the clan heads south over the continent seeking surer food supply and safety from ferocious mutant animals.

While the range of plants and animals they encounter in these warmer climes increases their chance for long-term survival, many other perils threaten them. Venomous Komodo dragons stalk them at every turn. Yet the biggest danger they will encounter is from another group of humans. Deep in a concrete bunker, the clan finds 50 young people, each of whom had been placed in cryogenic suspension to survive the nuclear wars of the 21 century. The clan faces a dilemma. Should the children be allowed to sleep on or should they be woken to enter the brutal, primitive place the world has become.

This novel includes all of the clan’s characters from “6001 Iceworld,” the first book in the series, including Tasha, the tribe’s queen. Only 15 years of age, she is mature beyond her years, as evinced by the tough decision making she shows during the thorniest of survival dilemmas. She is supported by her friend Mangrove, a deep-thinking advisor, and by Snotty, who is unafraid to defend the clan, even veering into recklessness to do so. Tasha’s sister, Biscetti, a quick-to-anger blonde, accompanies them, as does Dram, a tall and beautiful huntress whose character flaws will come to haunt the clan. 

“6001 The Sleepers” is a classic adventure that draws on the apocalyptic possibilities of science fiction. Haunting, imaginative and propelled by the group dynamics of youngsters determined to live into adulthood in a harsh world, the novel will draw the reader into its richly imagined landscape.
