Angel Tree, Christmas Box campaign under way
The program is a partnership of the Salvation Army, the Elizabethton/Carter County Community Service Committee, Hale Community Ministries, the Johnson City Press Christmas Box Program of Northeast Tennessee, Wal-Mart and several local churches and community organizations. The Elizabethton STAR is now a partner with the efforts this year. The STAR is helping with the promotion and printing for the Angel Tree and will be running an Angel Adoption Counter on a regular basis to give updates for how many angels are left for adoption.
This is the second year the Committee and the Salvation Army have teamed up to offer a satellite operation in Carter County.
During sign-ups that were held last month, 844 families were signed up for food and gift assistance. A total of 865 children were signed up for the Angel Tree program.
“I love the partnership we have here in Carter County,” said Major Jane Brewster with the Salvation Army. “There are 865 children signed up for the Angel Tree. That is up over 100 from last year. The need is definitely up this year and it is greater than ever before.”
Through the Angel Tree, parents sign their children up for assistance. They put the child’s wish list and their clothing sizes on an angel that is hung on a tree for people to adopt for the holiday season. They purchase gifts for the angel and then turn them back in to be given to the child.
The gifts for the angels should be new and unwrapped. Each sponsor should be willing to provide for a minimum of $50-$75 for each angel. This would include a new outfit, coat or shoes, a large toy and smaller toys.
The Johnson City Press Christmas Box Program provides the food boxes or gift cards for the Christmas dinner. Families of two members or less will receive a $30 gift card from Food City to purchase their own Christmas dinners because the amount of food in the boxes would be too much for their family size. The food boxes include 41 items, not including the smoked ham, 10-12 pound turkey, three-pound bag of onions and 10-pound bag of potatoes.

All living at our Mesa house are in the Savior of the World play coming up on 11 & 12 November 2011, only 2 weeks away. This is in part because we all love to sing in a good choir. We are finding joy in serving the Lord in this way. We are strengthened and comforted by the Holy Ghost in the practicing to present this in a pleasing way. We feel visited by angels and thrill to sing and feel such joy accompanied by angels singing and praising our Savior.
Here are some thoughts about the experience and how it is hard but with constant reminders of our Heavenly Father's love for mankind. Usually someone saying you did great on your part or feeling that Mary and Elizabeth and Joseph and so many parts are just right with a potential to share the gospel message not just thru acting but as the way they carry and present themselves. And you all have worked so hard to make this a success that we all want to do our part too.
I have no major miracles to report but a great feeling that I am about my Father's business and sharing great experiences with old friends and new acquaintances. I am also getting more done at work than usual in a shorter time so I can get some rest. My back is bad and it is not bothering me though I can see Gary Helmbold could use a helper to place props and all as he is limping.
