Moog making moves

Bob Brady thinks Moog Inc. is misunderstood.

The Elma-based company gets more than half of its business by selling parts and systems that are used on aircraft, satellites and rockets. But it also makes industrial equipment, medical devices and a wide range of other products, from the bases that move flight simulators to components that are used in wind turbines.

"One of our challenges is to do a better job explaining what it is that the company does," said Brady, Moog's chairman and chief executive officer.

The common thread running through all of Moog's diverse markets is its core technology that allows it to make complex systems that can precisely control motion or the flow of fluids, especially in uses, such as hospitals or outer space, where failure can have dire consequences.

The company competes in a high-value marketplace, making complicated and unique devices and reigns as a crown jewel in the region's high-tech manufacturing economy.

"You don't want our stuff failing on the airplane wing or on the space shuttle or on the medical pump," said John Scannell, Moog's president and chief operating officer, who last year moved into position as the heir apparent to the 70-year-old Brady.

"We're there because the technology and what we're able to do has become relevant," said Brady, who who has worked at Moog since 1966 and been its CEO for 23 years. "The approach has taken us into a lot of different businesses and we make a lot of different products, but the technology is essentially the same."

It has also helped Moog quietly become an economic powerhouse in the Buffalo Niagara region, carving out a position as one of its biggest private sector employers, with nearly 2,500 local workers. In comparison, the region's three main auto parts plants -- General Motors Corp.'s engine plant in the Town of Tonawanda and its components plant in Lockport, along with the Ford Motor Corp. stamping plant in Hamburg -- have about 2,800 employees combined.
