Blaze engulfs duplex

An early-morning fire destroyed a Whitefish duplex Sunday, forcing nine people out of the home.

The Whitefish Fire Department received an initial call at about 3 a.m. alerting them of a fire in the Sun Crest subdivision on Ridge Crest Drive below the entrance to Iron Horse.

Crews were on the scene within six minutes of the call when they found the approximately 4,000 square-foot building fully involved. The cause of the fire is undetermined, Whitefish Fire Chief Tom Kennelly said. The duplex was a total loss.

Of the nine occupants, two people were on vacation renting one half of the duplex, while the other seven, including children, were staying in the other half.

One of the residents was initially awakened by a noise and thought it could have been a bear, Kennelly said. After seeing light coming from outside, they realized the deck was on fire.

The two vacationing occupants were alerted of the fire and everyone safely escaped the building through the front door as the blaze engulfed the home.

Whitefish crews arrived with 35,000 gallons of water and also hooked up to a city hydrant in front of the duplex. That hydrant, however, quickly dried up.

They then pulled out about 1,200 feet of hose to connect to a hydrant on Wisconsin Avenue and relayed the water with engine pumps to boost pressure.

Public Works director John Wilson said the hydrants failed because a larger pump wasn’t triggered when fire hoses were pulling more than 100 gallons a minute.

Water pressure for most of the city is created by having a reservoir above town, Wilson explained. Sun Crest, however, is at the same elevation as the reservoir and booster pumps are used to create pressure.
