SOUTHCOAST
As part of the recent Catholic Schools Week celebrations, Bishop Stang High School in Dartmouth hosted the third annual Catholic Schools Challenge.
The challenge, held Feb. 2, was for seventh and eighth-graders from the five SouthCoast Catholic elementary schools. Participating were students from All Saints Catholic School, Holy Family-Holy Name and St. James-St. John in New Bedford, St. Francis Xavier in Acushnet and St. Joseph School in Fairhaven.
They arrived at Stang's John C. O'Brien Gymnasium "for a day of friendly competitions to celebrate Catholic education and highlight the unique gifts and talents of the students," according to a news release from Stang.
The event kicked off with Minute to Win It basketball challenges, minute games coordinated by Stang varsity basketball players, many of whom are graduates of the Catholic elementary schools. The next competition was in the arts, the design of a school flag for each of the schools. After lunch, Mission Impossible began, involving projects "chosen to accentuate the creative and intellectual skills of the students," the release said.
One example was the design of a skyscraper. "Students were given newspapers, paper clips and masking tape and the creative juices began to flow with an incredible variety of paper skyscrapers resulting," the release noted.
The day wrapped up with a Quiz Bowl challenge. At the end of the day the winners of the third annual Catholic School Challenge were the students from Holy Family-Holy Name School. The winners of the previous two Catholic School Challenges were the students from St. James-St. John School.
Also in from the Catholic schools front was this word from St. James-St. John Principal Cristina Raposo, who shared the importance of celebrating Catholic Schools Week.
