Lake Arrowhead Not-so-happy campers

Scorching heat has driven some people away from Lake Arrowhead State Park this summer.

The Fourth of July is normally very busy for the park, but this year was a different story.

"It's like it's dead," said Lake Arrowhead resident Laura Joss.

Business is down by 30 percent from last year, according to John Ferguson, the park's manager. He said it's that way all across the Panhandle-Plains region.

"We've had several visitors who have come out, and they've had reservations for three or four days and they leave after one day because it's so hot here," Ferguson said.

People aren't the only ones missing from the park. Nature and wildlife alike are struggling with the record heat.

Hackberry trees, a native hardy plant, are losing their leaves, along with the oak and pecan trees.

Ferguson said the mesquite trees seem to be about the only thing doing well.

"We're not seeing deer fawns this year like we have in the past, and we're not seeing the number of does in the park that we have seen in the past, so we're anxious about them," he said.

He fears the low numbers come from a lack of forage for them to graze on.

With 30 new babies this year, the park had to start watering for the prairie dogs in Prairie Dog Town to give them some green growth because they were suffering, as well.

Although the park is having a rough time beating the heat, the lake levels aren't as bad as some expected. The current lake level at Lake Arrowhead stands at 58.2 percent, down about 8 feet.

Ferguson said fishing is still doing well at the park.

"We have a regular group of guys who come out and fish off the pier, primarily for crappie, and they're still coming out and they're doing well.

The boaters who are going out on the lake are still having a good time. It's just the campers that have fallen off," he said.

A Lake Arrowhead resident since 1993 said he's seen it a lot worse in years past. It appears the water is going down at a steady pace rather than rapidly disappearing, according to the resident.
