17 MIRACLES (1 hr., 42 min.; PG for thematic material involving hardships and suffering) Nineteenth-century Mormon missionary Levi Savage helps handcart pioneers make the dangerous trek to Utah in this earnest, painstakingly crafted historical drama. The movie has structural problems, and ends up feeling more informational than inspiring as it ticks off possible instances of divine intervention that assisted the crossing. [C-]
50/50 (1 hr., 39 min.; R for language throughout, sexual content and some drug use) Joseph Gordon-Levitt gives a warmly engaging performance as a 27-year-old public radio producer gobsmacked by a cancer diagnosis in this moving, if problematic, disease drama. The movie has its share of cliches and the story is sidetracked by guys-will-be-guys sexual shenanigans, but there's also genuine insight and wit. [B-]
ABDUCTION (1 hr., 46 min.; PG-13 for sequences of intense violence and action, brief language, some sexual content and teen partying) Holy bleep! A regular teenage dude (an intense Taylor Lautner) semi-freaks after finding his own baby photo on a missing persons Web site and realizing his Life Is a Lie. It's a'ight, though, dog, because he's pretty ripped and he's got wicked mad secret agent skillz. Average in every respect. [C]
APOLLO 18 (1 hr., 26 min.; PG-13 for some disturbing sequences, and language) Astronauts discover something deeply unsettling on America's last manned mission to our nearest celestial neighbor. The latest entry in the "found footage" horror movie subgenre strings viewers along with minimal scares and needless character development. When it finally comes, the big reveal isn't anywhere near worth the wait. [D]
CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER (2 hrs., 4 min.; PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action) The biggest comic book superhero of this season's summer slate delivers the summer's best comic book superhero movie. Chris Evans is winningly earnest and properly heroic in the title role and director Joe Johnston delivers a Marvel-ous blend of wit, adventure and crisp, engaging action.

Some results: Cam Newton has his first NFL win, and if his numbers against the Jacksonville Jaguars look a bit more modest than those from the first two weeks then it might be because the game was played in a total monsoon. The Miami Dolphins were on
[A] WARRIOR (2 hrs., 19 min.; PG-13 for sequences of intense mixed martial arts fighting, some language and thematic material) Brawny brothers at odds with each other, as well as with their formerly no-account father, find an outlet in furious cage

Boycott Simon Property Group
Friday, July 24, 2009
Simon Property Group which, according to its website , is the "largest public U. S. real estate company", has made it clear that it doesn't want pro-freedom people on its property. At least, that's the message the company has sent in two of its actions in the past month.
This week, the Charlotte, NC, station News Channel 36 (WCNC) reported that The Free Market Warrior, a kiosk that sells bumper stickers, posters and tee-shirts with such incendiary slogans as "Work harder, Obama needs the money", "Impeach Obama" and "My parents chose life", is being evicted from Simon Property Group's Concord Mills outlet mall at the end of the month. I was alerted to this story by paleolibertarian blogger Karen De Coster .
Loren Spivack, owner of the kiosk chain, told WCNC that mall management contacted him after the Charlotte Observer "Nobody in that mall is selling anything from a conservative perspective. Plenty of people are selling things with a liberal perspective, with a pro-Obama perspective," he said. "Given that we are in America and not North Korea, we probably should have some stuff on the other side." Spivack says he is careful not to sell things that personally attack a politician and wants a fair exchange of ideas. "The material that I sell is about politics and ideas," he told Newschannel 36. "It's all legitimate criticism." Late last month another mall controlled by Simon Property Group forced the organizers of the Atlanta Tea Party to find another location for their planned July 4 event just 11 business days before it was scheduled to take place. The Tea Party, for which planning had been underway since March, was to be held on the Macy's parking lot with the permission of the property owner, who had even offered to pay for the fireworks. The property is not owned by Simon, but is adjacent to Gwinnett Place Mall, which is. According to Julianne Thompson, co-organizer of the event, the mall manager asked her and the owner of the Macy's parking lot to come to his office. There, the manager invoked an easement agreement the mall had with the adjacent property owner and forced the cancellation of the event.
