Enthusiasts flock to see steam trains at Tanfield Railway
TRAIN enthusiasts turned back time to reunite two Newcastle-built locomotives back in the region for the first time in more than 60 years.
Steam engines Agecroft No.1 and Birkenhead rolled out of Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn’s Forth Banks works in 1948 on route to power stations in Manchester and London.
Yesterday the virtually-identical pair returned to the North East to celebrate the region’s industrial heritage, by taking part in Tanfield Railway’s anniversary celebrations.
Museum director David Watchman said: “Bringing two Tyneside-built locomotives back to the North East after such a long absence is fantastic.
“They are both examples of classic Newcastle-built engines with a great history and they were thoroughly at home back in the region again.”
Based on a popular turn-of-the-century train design, Agecroft No. 1 spent its entire working life at Agecroft Power Station in Salford, while Birkenhead was employed at several power stations including Rye House and Acton Lane in the suburbs of London.
