Golf in Sicily: tee beside the sea with Sir Rocco Forte in Verdura

"Now Dad, remember you are meant to let the journalist win,” said Irene Forte, as we headed up to the clubhouse at Verdura, Sir Rocco Forte’s sparkling new golf and spa resort in southern Sicily. Sir Rocco dismissed his daughter’s mock concern with a grin, for whether he is wearing golf spikes, running shoes or tassled loafers, second place is first loser for this British-born Italian.

I had heard much about his famously competitive nature, so when Sir Rocco had strolled into the marble lobby the previous evening clad from head to toe in golfing gear, I thought the psychological games might have begun already. In fact, he had suffered a rare loss: Alitalia had mislaid his luggage and his outfit had been hastily commandeered from the golf shop. But I was not mistaken about his apparent golfing obsession; Rocco would spend most of the next few days practising his swing. He is a man who likes to leave little to chance.

That is why, in 1996, the forced sale of the family business must have been hard to take. His father, Charles, had built it up from nothing to an empire of 800 hotels and 1,000 restaurants – but the hostile £3.9 billion takeover of the Forte Group by Granada, a former British media and catering conglomerate, was one of the most acrimonious the City had seen. Sir Rocco had been out shooting when the news broke; 15 years on, you sense he still smells the gunpowder of this shot right to the heart of the business.

Out of the ashes of one empire, the foundations of another have been built – those of Rocco Forte Hotels, a collection of 13 upmarket hotels across Europe which includes The Balmoral in Edinburgh, The Lowry in Manchester and Brown’s, one of London’s flagship hotels, where Rudyard Kipling based himself. It is in this luxury sector that Sir Rocco wants to be king of the jungle – and at 66, his foot remains pressed firmly to the floor, with openings in Cairo, Jeddah, Marrakech and Abu Dhabi.
