The intersection of Second and Vine streets in downtown Hudson underwent nearly $25,000 in repairs on Sunday, Aug. 14.
Dennis Postler of Foth Infrastructure & Environment, the city’s consulting engineering firm, told the City Council the following night that the intersection is “noticeably smoother.”
A contractor injected a polymer material under the intersection’s concrete panels to raise and level them.
Postler said it will be smoother yet after the bumps on the north side of the intersection are eliminated as part of a mill and overlay project set to begin in the next week or two.
A 70-foot stretch of Second Street running north from the intersection will get a new asphalt surface in that project.
In 2010, the City Council decided to forego a $210,000 reconstruction of the intersection that would have included removing the existing concrete surface and adding base material.
Larger storm sewer pipe underneath the intersection, a right-turn lane on westbound Vine Street, and new curb and gutter also were planned. In addition, the traffic signal poles were to have been moved away from the curb to reduce the number of times they are hit by vehicles.
In June 2010, the City Council rejected all the contractor bids on that project. A majority of alderpersons thought there were better uses for the city’s limited street maintenance dollars.
This spring, the City Council opted for temporary repairs to the bumpy intersection. The council went with the proposal from Uretek ICR to level the intersection by pumping a polymer material underneath the concrete.
