Balmain loses loyal campaigner Val Moss

This may include a bench or seat in Illoura Reserve, a tree or other suitable memorialTRIBUTES have poured in for Balmain community activist and local stalwart Valerie Moss who recently passed way at the age of 73.
Hundreds of people attended a wake for Val, as she was known to her family and many friends, at the former Commercial Hotel in Balmain East where she was remembered for her passion and commitment to causes in her local community.
A former school teacher, Val joined the inaugural East Balmain Precinct committee in 1991 and continued to be an active member, holding the positions of both chairwoman and secretary over many years.
Councillor John Stamolis said he had lost a mentor, a great adviser and a trusted friend.
“Val’s skill and ability in dealing with major strategic issues as well as the basic community needs was exceptional,” he said. “She was a person of great integrity and honesty and our community is all the better for her tremendous contribution to local life.”
Fellow campaigner Kath Hacking said Val’s passing was a great loss to the community.
State MP for Balmain Jamie Parker said: “Val embodied the finest qualities of an active citizen: compassion, enthusiasm and absolute determination to do what was best for her community.”
“Val Moss was loved and respected by so many people,” said Mayor of Leichhardt Rochelle Porteous.
Val is survived by her husband Peter, her three sons Peter, David, and Damian, six grandchildren and her brother John.
