Five things: What we learned from week 3 of prep football

For the third game in a row, the Raiders had their fans’ hearts fluttering with a close finish. And Habersham showed for the second time this season that it can win in thrilling fashion, overhauling Salem 43-39 after scoring with less than a minute to play. The Raiders did so with... 1) a goalline stop and turnover with Salem threatening to put the contest away. 2) An impressive drive to score and pull within a field goal. 3) An onside kick recovery -- on the second attempt after the first was called back for offsides on Habersham. 4) A second straight touchdown drive to pull ahead -- a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kevin Ellison to receiver Zac Franks on third and 11 clinching the lead. 5) The Raiders defense keeping Salem out of the end zone after the Seminoles moved to the Habersham 32 with seconds to play. ... Habersham has won two and lost one in such fashion this season, and while coaches and fans would rather take a few easy victories, it could be a crazy campaign unfolding in Mount Airy Of course as long as they keep winning, Raiders fans will take it -- even though it may come with a giant does of antacid... Which leads us to point two... Every week, opposing defenses know the Raiders quarterback will lead Habersham’s option offense, and every week Ellison lights up those defense. The Raiders quarterback had a huge game Friday, rushing for 101 yards and scoring three touchdowns and also passing for another 146 yards with two touchdowns. He is also just yards away from setting the school rushing record. The senior injured a bone in his non-throwing hand last week just one play before throwing the game-winning touchdown pass against Salem but should be good to go this week against Clarke Central -- and you can bet he has the attention of the Clarke Central defense. It’s almost taken for granted to see these type of numbers for Flowery Branch’s senior running back: 14 carries, 136 yards and two touchdowns.
