Danielle's Daily Life Blog: Denim Chenille Surrender
Fourth, the project itself is getting a little old. Probably 95% of the sewing projects I've done in the past 5 years have been denim chenille quilts. I made several for charity auctions, a king sized one for myself, a king sized one for my parents, and throws for myself and my parents. Isn't it time I graduated to something else? I think so. The verdict was in after some reasoning with myself- I quit denim chenille quilts. But what to do with all those denim squares? One of the main points of this project was to reuse old fabric scraps that would have ended up in a landfill. My love for this pattern came not only from the binding and batting hater in me, but from the freegan in me as well. The majority of the squares in my room came from giant, XL or larger, very out of fashion, long denim gathered waist skirts from the thrift store- that I know NO ONE would have bought and worn. (Hence their 50 cents-a dollar price tags each). So this is what I did- I bagged them all up in either large garbage bags, the trick or treat containers they were stored in (in a futile attempt to keep them organized), and one small suitcase full and threw them in the car. I drove to Walmart to the big clothing donation bin and threw them all in there. I taped large yellow pieces of paper to each container saying, "Google Denim Chenille Quilt for further instructions" (since many of them are started). And I tossed them in. I know that someone will find them and have a blast. I know, because a lot of the people who do the thrift store donations thing are also very home-makey and I am betting a lot of them sew. I just know the right person will find them.
