Amey was major community contributor

NORWICH – Norwich Township is mourning the loss of a former councillor and major contributor to the community after George Amey, 63, died in his sleep on Aug. 16.

According to the coroner's report, Amey's death was the result of an ongoing heart condition.

To those who knew him, Amey was very much a family man and community-minded individual. He was actively involved with minor sports as his children Rick and Angela grew up, coaching minor baseball for many years and briefly coaching men's ball with the Norwich Brewers. Along with coaching baseball and minor hockey, he was involved with the executive board and became president of each organization. Eventually he joined the executive for the Norwich Merchants hockey team for more than a dozen years, holding a position as director, vice-president and treasurer.

"He always put the players first, no matter what the problems on the board were," former Merchants president Randy Nobbs said. "He made sure they were taken care of.

"He treated the players like they were his own kids."

No matter what the topic of conversation, Nobbs said, it always went back to his kids, Rick and Angela, and his grandkids.

"He was very proud of them," he said.

Once Amey finished his direct involvement with sports, he began a career as Ward 2 councillor for Norwich Township. There, he worked with Ward 4 Coun. Susan Hampson, who was mayor of Norwich at the time. Hampson said Amey continued his support of the community and junior hockey, and always volunteered for fundraisers and community events.

"He was an upbeat, jolly person," she said. "Always had a pleasant personality."

In addition to serving on council, both Amey and his wife Pauline ran a business in downtown Norwich called Norwich Outfitters after Amey had worked at Cole Business Machines in Woodstock for more than a decade. The store sold office supplies, and Amey repaired typewriters and fax machines. After running the store for many years, it then became Norwich V & S, until Amey and his wife decided to sell it.
