Pearl Jam anniversary concert reveals spirit of collaboration

EAST TROY — Pearl Jam celebrated its 20th anniversary with a pair of shows at Wisconsin's Alpine Valley Music Theatre over the weekend. Here's our running diary from Sunday, the second and final day of the mini-fest headlined by the veteran Seattle quintet.

1:20 p.m. "This song's about being lost," says former Grandaddy frontman Jason Lytle introducing "I Am Lost (And the Moment Cannot Last)," a sparse piano ditty colored with ambient noise that calls to mind a gathering storm. It's a fitting start to an overcast day that began with this reporter printing up some bad directions and temporarily wandering aimlessly through the back roads of southern Wisconsin in search of the remote venue.

2:35 p.m. "There must be 25 people living inside of me at all times," sang shaggy troubadour Joseph Arthur during a set-opening "Temporary People." Fittingly, a number of them surface during the Akron, Ohio, native's early afternoon performance, including the battered beat poet ("Almost Blue"), the lovelorn balladeer ("Honey and the Moon") and, on a hallucinatory "I Miss the Zoo," the visual artist. As Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament — nearly unrecognizable with the hood of his sweatshirt pulled tight over his dome — lays down a scraggly backdrop of guitar, Arthur completes a large-scale artwork onstage, splashing a canvas with red paint suggestive of the emotional wounds that arise in his broken songs.

3:05 p.m. Three-fifths of Pearl Jam — guitarists Ament and Mike McCready and drummer Matt Cameron — join Joseph Arthur for a pair of tunes, including the Ament-penned "When the Fire Burns," and a ferocious "In the Sun" that finds McCready trading howling riffs with Arthur. Despite the tune's summery title (and the best efforts of all onstage to blast away the persistent cloud cover through sheer volume) the gloomy weather that's plagued the entire weekend persists.

3:15 p.m. Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder makes his first Sunday appearance, running through a deconstructed tune with New Zealand native Liam Finn that comes across like a musical version of an Abbot and Costello routine. For nearly two minutes the two swap instruments (the Pearl Jam singer sits in on drums and then shifts to guitar before belting out a few lines from "Habit"), but nothing close to an actual tune develops before Vedder departs. Still, combined with the earlier Joseph Arthur/Pearl Jam jam session, four-fifths of the Seattle crew has now appeared onstage, assuring their fingerprints are all over the concert bearing their name.

The Importance of Learning Chord Progressions | Easy Piano Styles ...

Did you know that there are seven chords in every key of music that you play? And within those seven chords, there are patterns that are used repeatedly.

Let’s call the chord that is built on the first scale degree of the key your are in I. The second chord (built on the second note of the scale) would be called II and so forth.

Many songs use familiar chord progressions. I should back up and say that a progression is a sequence of chords. For example, I-IV-V-I is a very common chord progression. In the key of C, that would be C-F-G-C.

In jazz and pop music, there is an extremely popular progression that you should know and practice vociferously (great word). Here it is:
