Feedlot challenges
For feedlot operators like Tom Brink of JBS Five Rivers Cattle Feeding at Greeley, Colorado challenges are coming from different directions. On one hand there’s the drought.
“It’s been very difficult for producers in the South Central part of country,” said Brink. “It has caused them to move cattle early, they are liquidating cows, but they are also moving all of the grass cattle off early so we’ve seen very active placements of cattle through the summer months that we typically wouldn’t see until fall, plus the cow liquidation part of it, there’s actually cows in feed yards and there’s a lot of cows that have gone to slaughter because of it as well.”
Another challenge for feedlot operators is the cost of corn and with the size of the corn crop in question, Tom Brink tells Brownfield he expects end users will need to make some adjustments.
“Well I think what’s going to happen is all the major users of corn, which includes ethanol and the meat industries are going to have to cut back, and probably exports too,” Brink said. “Cattle feeders, we may have to take days off cattle and shorten our feeding period if these prices stay high much longer or go higher.”

JBS Five Rivers Cattle Feeding operate 12 feedlots, that have a combined capacity of 950,000 head, the feed yards are locationed in Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Idaho, , they purchase two million bushels of corn weekly.
