Late start to snow season chills skifield coffers
Skifield coffers were badly hit by a late snow season but the extent of the revenue dip is not clear yet, the Ski Areas Association said last night.
An unseasonably late start to winter delayed the snow season by almost a month for NZSki-run Coronet Peak and The Remarkables near Queenstown, and about two weeks for Wanaka skifields.
Cardrona Alpine Resort opened two weeks later than planned and the delay was compounded because it coincided with school holidays in Australia, according to a financial report.
Vealls, the company behind Cardrona, reported revenue of $17.3 million for the financial year ending June 30.
However, the start of this season was hit by a lack of snow, the report said.
"As this occurred at the time of the Australian school holidays ... the loss of revenue was significant and unlikely to be recovered later."
Snow dumps restored skifield conditions but it was too early to forecast the overall impact, the report said.
Ski Areas Association executive director Miles Davidson said any skifields that relied on income in June lost out.
"That big snow storm in July was six weeks too late.
"Those areas planning to open in June – there will be some financial impact."
The question was whether skifields were able to recoup lost revenue throughout the season, he said.
He said the extent of the loss in revenue or visitor numbers would not be known till later this year.
"The tourism industry has had a few things happen this year that haven't helped.
"Skifields can weather it but they don't like it," Mr Davidson said.
Cardrona's revenue for the last financial year was $14 million.
Director Ian Veall's report said overall revenue last season was $17.3m, with 81 per cent of the total derived from the ski resort.
The skifield's season opened as scheduled in late June last year with good snow conditions but warmer weather in September reduced the number the skiers, the report said.
