6/8/2011 IL Local Food, Farms and Jobs Council Meeting Report ...

The Illinois Local Food, Farms and Jobs Council met in Springfield, Illinois on June 8th with the primary focus on reports provided by state-based local food initiatives as well as community-based local food initiatives. Following the reports provided by initiative leaders, a discussion centered upon building partnerships in the local food system of Illinois. The report of the meeting follow:

At the Council’s winter meeting (March 2), directors elected an executive committee of co-presidents Johari Cole and Jim Braun; vice-president Bill Connors; secretary Bob Heuer; treasurer Keith Bolin; and at-large members Brandon Johnson, Marjorie Sawicki and Tom Spaulding.  Council directors charged this new leadership team with devising a community-based approach to implementing the Council’s strategic plan.

In preparation for the summer meeting, the executive committee held one in-person meeting, and then conducted conference calls on a regular basis over the course of the next three months.  The key objective was to clarify how the Council can best fulfill its legislative mandate to facilitate food system development in urban, suburban, exurban and rural communities statewide.  People from all walks of life and all regions of Illinois are becoming active in local food projects. A major impediment is isolation, and the absence of a local food support network that enables relationship and infrastructure development. As such, the summer meeting was designed as an open forum that would invite a diversity of constituencies to interact and share their vision for how they are becoming active in local food work statewide.

Approximately 50 people attended the June 8 meeting, including 20 Council directors; representatives of the office of Gov. Pat Quinn and of Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon; seven state agencies and USDA Rural Development Illinois. Also on hand were local food leaders from throughout Illinois—including farmers as well as representatives of non-profit organizations and community groups.
