Restaurant Critic Review: Kodi's in Hobe Sound is the place to go for steak
In a town full of seafood restaurants, not a lot of places come to mind when people ask me where to find a good steak. So I decided to visit Kodi's, a Hobe Sound steak house run by Jack Gardiner, the former head chef of Barrymore's Prime Steakhouse in Jupiter.
This is Kodi's second year at the location, which for years was the Mexican-themed Cactus Jack's.
It seems that returning to his steak house roots was a good choice for Gardiner, since Kodi's quickly gained a following.
We ordered a spinach salad with sweet bacon dressing, mushrooms, and large wedges of ripe tomato that tasted fantastic ($6). Their house salad with homemade pistachio dressing also is a popular choice.
All of the meat is cut to order, and it makes a difference. The lamb chops were triple-cut — with three bones per chop — thick enough to allow a juicy pink center that gave way to marvelous little pockets of fat ($22 for 2 chops or $27 for 3). Charred edges gained extra texture from a simple spice rub. I was delighted with my choice.
My date opted for the 6-ounce filet mignon ($19). The inside was a deep purple, and several toppings were offered, including blue cheese, garlic and oil, grilled shrimp, or bernaise, which we ordered on the side to sample. The kitchen prepares the bernaise to order, and it was very good.
But the meat, which has been aged 45 to 50 days, is certainly good enough to stand alone.
Kodi's side dishes are equally impressive. Each dinner comes with two, so we tried a rich creamed spinach that could double as a dip, mashed potatoes, button mushrooms soaking in butter and some browned and beautiful scalloped potatoes. These are big portions, and we barely made a dent in them, but each one of them was a winner.
The restaurant is on the small side, with some tables in better position than others (we moved when we realized we were sitting with a view of the open men's room), but the atmosphere is comfortable and the service friendly.
