Old Dhaka wholesalers not so cheery

It was around 11am Wednesday at the city's largest wholesale fabrics market in Islampur. Md Ruhul Amin, 55, was passing his time reading a newspaper in his store due to thin presence of customers.

It was an unusual picture two weeks ahead of the Eid festival. The area was supposed to be abuzz with customers. This year, most traders were passing a lean time -- gossiping or reading newspapers.

Sales of fabrics ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr declined significantly in the city's wholesale markets for inclement weather, which killed the traders' willingness to journey up to the capital for business.

Traders said sales of fabrics for shirts and trousers and salwar-kameez also fell, as customers seem more inclined to buy readymade garments.

Many bulk buyers failed to journey to Dhaka from the rest of the country due to rainy weather and transportation problems, said a wholesale cloth dealer at Islampur. Falling demand for tailor-made clothes due to a rise in tailoring costs also dampened fabrics sales, he added.

Amin, owner of New Fancy Cloth Store, said the customers nowadays prefer readymade garments to tailor-made clothes as the tailors have raised their charges due to a price hike of raw materials.

Many like purchasing readymade garments to save time as a tailor may take nearly a month or more to deliver a dress, said Amin who sells both imported and local trouser fabrics at prices varying from Tk 125 to Tk 550.

“We expected a brisk business ahead of the Eid, especially after the 15th Ramadan,” said Amin.

“I have sold fabrics worth Tk 2 lakh every day before Shab-e-Barat, where my daily sales now stand at Tk 30,000.”

Islampur's wholesale traders mainly depend on the sales of retailers who are the main buyers of the clothing market. Amin also sells fabrics to retail traders of different districts, including Rangpur, Dinajpur, Bagerhat, Gopalganj and Jessore.

“We are getting fewer orders from retailers across the country as they also becoming victims of the rough weather and bad roads,” Amin said.
