Downed trees from snowstorm leave over half a million NJ residents without power
STATEWIDE — It was a recipe for disaster.
A heavy, wet snow put weight on absorbent trees still full of leaves, setting off a domino effect that led to more than half a million New Jersey customers still being without power this morning. Gov. Chris Christie is among more than 604,000 utility customers across New Jersey still without power.
“That’s what created the issues with the trees down, which caused the downed wires, which caused the power outages,” said Mary Goepfert, external affairs officer for the state’s Office of Emergency Management.
This morning, 297,000 PSE&G customers were without power, along with 241,925 customers of Jersey Central Power and Light, 22,524 customers of Rockland Electric – which serves part of Bergen, Passaic and Sussex counties — and 33 customers of Atlantic City Electric.
Traffic lights are out along Route 206 in Mount Olive and Chester.
In Washington Township (Morris County), downed trees and power lines have caused several road closures: Apgar Road, North 4 Bridges Road, Fairview Avenue, Old Glenbrook Drive, Stony Hill Road and Cory Lane.
Kinnelon police said downed power lines were the “major concern” in the wooded borough in northern Morris County. Lots of fallen trees took down lines around town, much of which was still without power this afternoon.
Police said most of the roads were open because public works crews had been working continually since Saturday afternoon.
Parts of western Union County received as much as 8 inches of snow, and hundreds of downed trees have knocked out power in nearly every part of the county, said Sebastian D'Elia, spokesman for Union County.
Salt spreaders were out in force last night, said D'Elia, who added that Summit appears to have gotten the worst of the storm.
Runnells Hospital in Berkeley Heights lost power during the storm but is operating normally on generator power, D'Elia said.

New Jersey pedestrians at greater risk of injury on Halloween ...
The last place that a parent wants to be on Halloween is in the emergency room, waiting to hear how serious their child was injured. In New Jersey and across the nation, Halloween is a holiday that is supposed to be filled with fun costumes, candy corn and parties.
But Halloween is also the deadliest night of the year for people who are on the streets. According to AAA, statistics show that more pedestrians are injured and killed on October 31 than any other day of the year.
Children and parents head out of their houses armed with buckets for candy and dressed in costumes that range from princesses to zombies. As the night progresses, trick-or-treaters walk from house to house through the neighborhood. This can put pedestrians in dangerous situations, especially if a negligent or reckless driver comes flying down the street.
Parents are encouraged to stick to well-lit areas and crosswalks to reduce the risk of a pedestrian accident. In addition, it can help to incorporate reflective tape or bright colors into a child's costume to increase visibility.
But even if a parent takes steps to keep their children safe, there is no way to predict a driver who may not be paying attention on the road. If a driver has been drinking or is distracted by a cellphone, he or she may not see a group of kids crossing the street or standing on the edge of a curb. This type of negligence can cause a lot of injuries.
Halloween should be a night filled with fun family memories. But if you or your child is the victim of a pedestrian accident, there are ways to hold the negligent driver responsible for his or her actions.
