Working parents choose ACT schools

FOR Queanbeyan father Michael Burns the choice of a Canberra School for his daughter was two-fold.

His daughter Anna is currently in Year 9 at Alfred Deakin high School after spending her entire schooling life in the ACT.

The family lived in Bungendore when Anna was born in 1996 but both Mr Burns and his wife, Gianoula were working in Canberra.

“That meant that when we were looking for a preschool or childcare it was natural to look in Canberra,” Mr Burns said.

“Even though we lived in Bungendore it made sense for one of us to drop her off at [St Nicholas Greek-Australian Preschool] in Yarralumla and then proceed to work and then be nearby in case we were needed.

“Once we started fitting into the Canberra system and Anna was making friends it was a natural flow-on to continue her education in the ACT.”

Mr Burns said the decision to cross the border also came down to an impression at the time that there were more children dedicated to learning in the ACT.

“We spoke with some teachers in the ACT who had taught in Queanbeyan and they raised some issues with us,” he said. “We were also very concerned about other kids being in disruptive classes and Anna not being able to learn.

Your Assessment! « Alfred Deakin High School Music

Hi class,

Your assessment will take the form of an in-class test, to be held Monday 12 September during Period 4.

The test will consist of 3 parts: listening, short answer and extended answer.

Study Guide

Listening: the listening will take approximately 10 minutes. You will be played 5 musical examples and asked to state the composer, title, compositional style, instrumentation, and  any special features. The examples will be drawn from:

Stravinsky: Rite of Spring (opening)

Short Answer: You will be asked to answer in two or three sentences some questions on the musical styles covered this term. This section may also include some short compositional activities to allow you to show your understanding of various techniques studied. This section should take 15 minutes to complete.

Extended Answer: You will be required to write a short essay of 1-2 A4 pages (150-300 words). I highly recommend you make sure you have a thorough knowledge of one or two musical styles, including musical examples, to be able to answer this question. Revising the examples covered in class will assist, but for high marks consider researching other composers and their music to include in your answer. This section should take 20 minutes to complete.

This assessment is an open book exam – you will be allowed to have your music booklet as well as one A4 piece of paper (writing can be on both sides) of extra notes. Please be aware that this is a long test. You can have your notes with you, but if you have to look up every single piece of information, you will not have time to finish the test.

Styles/techniques you will need to be aware of are: neoclassicism, impressionism (visual art and music), serialism (also known as 12-tone), experimental, avant-garde, post-modernism, minimalism, electronic music, aleatoric music, and expressionism. You should also know some major events of the 20th century and how and why they affected music.
